Clinical Engineer Job Descriptions

Clinical engineers use their technical skills and knowledge to design, develop and improve the equipment used in medical treatment and aftercare of the patient. Their work can cover areas ranging from medical instruments to the methods of rehabilitation.
Their work may include:
· Improvements to test equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs and speech synthesizers (known as assistive technologies)
· The development of artificial limbs, for example using microelectronic sensors that attach to the patient's own tissues giving more control

· Making artificial joints, heart valves and cochlear implants for new materials to reduce the risk of rejection by the patient's body
· Design team allows new forms of medical treatment to evolve, for example, optical instruments for use in minimally invasive surgery and image-guided surgical techniques
· Day to day management of medical equipment such as machines, scanners, imaging and monitoring systems
• Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure that all equipment is functioning properly and safely.
