| Clinical scientists to offer
advice to hospital staff the most appropriate way to test,
diagnose and treat the patient's condition.
As a scientist, general practitioner, their functions are:
· Interpreting test results and suggest methods of medical
treatment
· Research, develop and test new methods of diagnosis and
treatment
· Advise physicians on the use and purchase of products and
equipment
· Manage a team of biomedical scientists, medical technical
officers, medical laboratory assistants and support staff.
You could work in a variety of specialised areas within the
clinical sciences, including:
· Biochemistry Clinic - the
analysis of body fluids and tissues to help diagnose and treat
patients
· Clinical cytogenetics / molecular genetics - the study of
chromosomes and the cellular DNA to diagnose genetic diseases
· Clinical Embryology - Research infertility, including IVF
treatment and assisted reproduction
· The clinical immunology - the development of tests and treatments
to manipulate the immune system to treat diseases such as
AIDS
· Clinical microbiology - the identification of bacterial,
viral, fungal and parasitic infections in patients
· Hemostasis and thrombosis - the identification of imbalances
in the blood from clotting factors and anticoagulant blood
· Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics - corresponding to
potential donors and recipients of organ transplants and bone
marrow
· Science audiology - the development of methods of measurement
and compensation of hearing loss, usually in children and
older people
· Medical physics - the application of physical science to
improve diagnosis and treatment of disease
· Engineering Clinic - Designand development of instruments
for patient monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation.
