Consumers science is the study of the tastes, needs and preferences
of consumers. As a scientist of consumers who represent research
and consumer insight, giving advice on how to improve the
quality and popularity of a product or service.
A typical working area of the consumer science
is the development of food products. In this field you work
for a manufacturer or a supermarket chain, research and
design of new dishes and food products of interest to consumers.
Other areas include:
· Product and service development: advice on products ranging
from housewares to public services
· Quality of security: the development of test programs
to ensure that products meet quality standards and legal
requirements
· Marketing: use market research to plan how to package,
advertise and distribute a product
· Consumption advice: representing the rights of consumers,
using knowledge of specific legislation
· Catering: hotels counseling, schools, restaurants, nursing
homes or hospitals in the type of food to provide
· Publication and public relations: the information produced
in the kitchen, family health and new products, or the link
with the media
· Education: providing advice on healthy living, often as
a teacher in high school or older and higher education
· The government departments: the work of agencies like
the Food Standards Agency or Trading Standards to enforce
food safety and consumer protection.
