| Coroners are independent
judicial officers who seek the causes of any sudden or unexpected
deaths that are reported to them.
As a medical examiner must:
Investigate the circumstances of all sudden deaths cases,
violent or unnatural
• Determine the cause of death by looking at all available
information (often this involves discussing the case with
the late Dr.) · Decide whether to order
an autopsy if there are questions about the cause of death
· Carry out an investigation if the autopsy showed that death
was not natural
· Notify the Secretary about the death or the results of research
· Ensure that all procedures and records to comply with the
law
