Working
with leather is a skilled occupation and leather craft workers
use traditional tools and methods to make items such as clothing,
footwear, personal accessories and home furnishings. They
work with different types of leather, such as cowhides, nubuck,
chamois, shagreen and suede.
As a leather craft worker you would: · work from a design pattern to measure and cut out leather sections · hand- or machine-stitch sections together, or use solvents · fit linings, handles buckles and eyelets · Apply finishes like stains, waxes and polishes. You could also use your craft skills to make and repair specialist products and equipment, for example: · saddles, bridles and harnesses · coverings and finishes for books, boxes, chests and tableware · Clothing, armour and weapons for historical re-enactment organisations.
Key Skills · attention to detail · good practical and creative design skills · the ability to concentrate for long periods · the ability to measure and cut sections accurately · good eyesight, particularly for close intricate work · a knowledge of CAD packages if working in pattern design · good customer care skills · An awareness of health and safety issues. |
