| Motor vehicle technician’s service and repair
cars, vans, motorbikes and larger vehicles such as Lorries and coaches.
They are trained to work on all areas of vehicle mechanics and electrics,
from the engine and exhaust systems to the air-conditioning and
security features. You could specialise in light vehicles (cars, and vans), motorbikes, or heavy vehicles like trucks, buses and construction machinery. Whichever type of vehicle you work with, typical tasks would include: · finding and identifying mechanical faults, for example in the brakes, gears or fuel pumps · checking for problems in newer vehicles with testing equipment connected to the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU) · advising owners on the repairs needed and how critical they are · providing time and cost estimates for jobs · carrying out repairs, which could include replacing damaged parts · Carrying out routine servicing and checks.
Key Skills · an excellent knowledge of motor vehicle technology · excellent practical skills · good problem-solving skills to find faults · the ability to work quickly and pay attention to detail · the ability to work without supervision · good communication skills · the ability to follow written instructions · a reasonable level of fitness, with normal colour vision · an up-to-date knowledge of developments, especially new engine types and electronics · An awareness of health and safety regulations. |
