| Your
job as a town planner (or spatial planner) would be to help shape
the way towns and cities develop. This would involve balancing
the competing demands placed on land by housing, business, transport
and leisure, and making sure plans meet the economic and social
needs of the community.
Your key responsibilities would include:
• planning for new or refurbished housing to create affordable,
energy efficient homes
• managing transport growth and encouraging public transport
schemes like trams
• redesigning street layouts to improve public safety, control
traffic and reduce crime
• developing parkland, woodland and waterways in a sustainable
way
• conserving historical buildings, archaeological sites
and areas of local or national importance
• ruling on planning applications
• enforcing planning controls, for instance on building
that has started without permission
• Working with local people and businesses through community
organisations and public meetings to hear ideas and concerns about
planning proposals. |
