Proofread carefully. No mistakes are allowed! No spelling
errors, no incorrect dates, no grammatical errors. None. ONE
mistake indicates carelessness to the employer and may disqualify
you before you've even had a chance. If spelling and grammar
aren't strong points, ask for help. • Write individual letters. Personalised communications are always the way to go, so take the time to tailor each letter to the organisation and person to whom you're writing. "Generic" letters are offensive to recruiters or may be not even seen by many employers. • Appearance counts. Invest in nice stationery. Choose a "warm" typeface that's clear and easy to read, such as Times New Roman, Courier, or Arial, and always use a quality printer. Use "Monarch" size paper (7" x 10 1/2") if you like, or the standard size (8 1/2" x 11"). Send originals, never photocopies or corrected versions.
• Forget photos. Unless you're an aspiring actor or model, don't enclose a photo. It gives the screener one more arbitrary reason not to call you for the interview. • Use simple, clear sentences. Choose every word carefully. Constantly ask yourself, "Is there any way I can say this more clearly?" And, "Is this giving the reader the exact idea I mean to communicate?" • Keep copies. You'll need to have them handy when you follow up later. |
