| I have worked in the public sector as a
road sweeper for fifteen years. I am committed and dedicated individual
to my line of work. My work entails maintaining and keeping the
roads clean to a high standard. This involves picking up the litter
and disposing it in my moveable bin, which I take around the area
which I look after. I
also liaise with the local council dustbin men, repair men, pest
control team who work around my area for a number of reasons.
The main reason being to report any issues relating to damaged
dustbins, lightings, traffic signals and report of any vermin
sightings. I also build up strong relationships with the local
businesses in order to help and assist them in their disposable
of their waste. This is produced from their business activity.
I am very conscious about the environmental
damage, which litter lots do, and that’s why I carry my mobile
phone to photograph people throwing litter. I first ask them nicely
to pick up the litter and if they decline then I take their photo
and pass it onto the local volunteer officers who deal with such
matters. The key aim of my role is to make myself recognised by
the local population, through my day to day activities and also
I utilise my interpersonal skills effectively to deal with matters
concerning public waste.
I always greet passersby with a smile
and a hello; try to make conversation, as this makes them open
up more to me, and are more likely to bring up a waste matter
which is concerning them. This has happened on a number of occasions
for example an elderly gentleman who I got acquainted with whilst
undertaking my day to day sweeping activities, reported sightings
of rats coming out from the local Indian takeaway. What I did
was to bring the matter to the attention of the Takeaway Manager
and informed him that he needs to get in touch with the Pest control
Team. I also informed him that failure to do so will mean that
I will have to report this matter to the local health authority
as this directly affects the health safety of members of the public.
I am very interested in the role of Head
Road Sweeper because it will enable me teach the new generation
of the techniques and methods of becoming a competent and adept
individual in the activity of road sweeping.
